Marketing for law firms
Legal marketing is expensive because the intent is strong and the stakes are high. Someone searching "DUI lawyer near me" at 11pm is going to hire somebody within a day or two, and every firm in the county knows it, which is why attorneys pay the highest cost per lead of any category in the benchmarks.
Covers Family, estate, personal injury, criminal defense, business and real estate practices.
How customers find you
That makes two things unusually valuable: being chosen without an auction (reviews, referrals from other professionals, and content that answers the client's first question), and converting the leads you do pay for. A firm that answers the phone within the hour and books the consultation on the first call can outspend nobody and still win.
- 01Google search, often late at night
High-intent phrases with a practice area and a place. The AI answer at the top increasingly names firms directly.
- 02A referral from another professional
Accountants, realtors, other attorneys. The referred client still reads your reviews before calling.
- 03Google Maps and Local Services Ads
Legal is an eligible category; the Google Screened badge sits above the regular ads.
- 04Reviews and the firm's own site
The consultation is booked on the phone, but the decision to call is made on the reviews.
- 05Past clients
Estate, family and business work generates repeat matters and referrals for years, if the firm stays in touch.
What to fix first
They cost almost nothing, they work within weeks, and every later decision gets easier once they are in place.
Fix intake before buying leads
A lead that costs $132 and reaches voicemail is gone. A named person, a script, a same-hour reply and a booked consultation on the first call are the highest-return work a firm can do.
Get the review system running, within the rules
Ask at the close of the matter, with a direct link, in a way your state bar allows. Reply to every review carefully; never confirm a client relationship in public.
Answer the first question in writing
"What happens after a DUI arrest in [your state]" is a page, a video and an AI citation. Clear, specific answers earn the call and the trust before the phone rings.
Numbers to know
Only the figures an article on this site cites a source for. Your own numbers beat any of them, which is what the tools are for.

Replying within an hour made firms about seven times as likely to qualify a lead as waiting an hour longer (Harvard Business Review).
What works
- Local Services Ads for eligible practice areas, with reviews driving placement
- Practice-area pages that answer the specific questions clients ask, in plain English, one page per matter type
- A referral system aimed at the professionals who meet your clients first
- A review ask built into the closing letter, with a direct link
- A short email note to past clients a few times a year: what changed in the law, what to do about it
What to skip
- Broad-match search campaigns that pay attorney prices for "free legal advice" searches
- Testimonial claims, "best" or "specialist" language that your bar's advertising rules restrict
- Generic legal blog posts that exist on ten thousand other firm sites
- Any lead vendor that resells the same inquiry to several firms unless your intake is the fastest
The system
Build them in this order, one at a time, and automate only after the manual version works.
- 01
Capture
Every inquiry logged with its source and matter type, with a tracked number on every campaign and directory.
- 02
Intake
A script, a same-hour reply, a consultation booked on the first contact, and a follow-up sequence for the ones who go quiet.
- 03
Prove
Reviews asked at the close of each matter within your bar's rules, and answered with care.
- 04
Stay
Past clients and referral sources hear from the firm on a rhythm, so the next matter comes back to you.

The auction is expensive: attorneys pay about $132 per lead on Google search ads, the highest of any category in the benchmarks, and more in large metros. But most of what makes a small firm win costs time rather than money: fast intake, reviews, referral relationships and pages that answer real questions.
