Marketing for accounting and CPA firms
Most accounting firms do not have a lead problem in March. They have a client-quality problem all year: too many one-time returns, not enough businesses on monthly advisory, and a calendar that only fills when the deadline forces it. Marketing for a CPA firm is the work of attracting the clients you want, in the months when you have time to onboard them.
Covers CPA firms, tax practices, bookkeeping and advisory firms, fractional CFO services.
How customers find you
Those clients choose slowly and on trust. They ask their attorney or banker, they read what the firm has written, they look at the reviews, and they want to know how you charge before they call. A firm with a stated niche, a few clear pages and a referral rhythm wins them. A firm that advertises "full-service accounting" in April competes with everyone and wins nobody.
- 01A referral from an attorney, banker or client
The main source for most firms. The referred owner then searches your name and reads everything.
- 02Google search for a specialty
"CPA for dentists", "small business accountant [city]", "fractional CFO". A narrow page wins; a generalist does not.
- 03Google Maps and reviews
"Accountant near me" and "tax preparer" are map searches in season. Reviews are the tie-breaker among credible firms.
- 04LinkedIn and the firm's own notes
Where business owners see you being useful between tax seasons. Notes on one subject, not announcements.
- 05Local Services Ads and search ads
Tax services and financial planning are eligible categories. Advisory and business clients clear the lead cost; individual returns usually do not.
What to fix first
They cost almost nothing, they work within weeks, and every later decision gets easier once they are in place.
Say who you are for, in one sentence
"Tax and advisory for medical practices in [your region]" beats "full-service accounting". Narrow is findable, referable and trusted.
Explain how you charge
A plain pricing page, with ranges or a starting point, filters the one-time returns you do not want and reassures the business owners you do.
Turn referrals into a system
A list of the attorneys, bankers and clients who send work, a rhythm for staying useful to them, and a one-line description of who you serve that makes introducing you easy.
Numbers to know
Only the figures an article on this site cites a source for. Your own numbers beat any of them, which is what the tools are for.
The nearest category in WordStream's 2026 search benchmarks; business services runs about $94. A monthly advisory client clears either many times over.
Edelman and LinkedIn's 2024 study of B2B decision makers. The firm's notes are the proof business owners look for.
Return per dollar across industries (Litmus). A quarterly note to clients and referral partners is how the firm stays the obvious call.
What works
- A stated niche on the first screen and in every profile, with a page per industry you serve
- A plain how-we-charge page and a what-to-expect page for new business clients
- One useful note a month (what changed, what it means, what to do this quarter) reused on LinkedIn, by email and on the site
- A referral system with the attorneys, bankers and clients who meet your prospects first
- Off-season campaigns for advisory, cleanup and bookkeeping clients, when you have time to onboard them
What to skip
- Advertising in March for clients you cannot onboard until May
- Generic tax-tip posts every firm publishes
- Buying leads from aggregators that sell the same business to five firms
- Replying to reviews with anything that confirms a client relationship or discusses their finances
The system
Build them in this order, one at a time, and automate only after the manual version works.

By marketing in the off-season for the clients they want: a stated niche, a page per industry served, a plain pricing page, a monthly note that shows the firm's thinking, and a referral rhythm with attorneys and bankers. The firms that grow their advisory book treat May to December as the selling season and tax season as delivery.
